When it comes to vaccines, conversations tend to focus on childhood immunizations, but did you know that even adults need boosters? That’s right. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has schedules for both adults and children so everyone knows what vaccines they need — and when.
In light of current events, you’re not alone if you’re wondering if you and your family are caught up on vaccines. That’s why our experienced team at Dr. Bridget Bellingar DO & Associates is more than happy to get you up to date.
In the meantime, here’s a handy guide for the most common vaccines.
Childhood vaccines
There are many vaccines that protect your children. Some vaccines — such as hepatitis B — are given immediately after birth. Other vaccines are given at specific intervals between six weeks of age and 18 months.
This list includes vaccines for:
- Hepatitis B
- Rotavirus
- DTap
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (hib)
- Pneumococcal conjugate
- IPV
- Influenza
Some vaccines like the flu shot are administered yearly while others must be given in a series within a few weeks of each other.
Depending on your child’s age, they may benefit from other vaccines such as the HPV vaccines. It’s OK if you feel overwhelmed trying to keep track of all of the boosters. One of our providers will ensure that your child gets the necessary immunizations.
Adult boosters
As with adolescent immunizations, some vaccines for adults are best given annually. This includes the flu shot. Adults may also need boosters for the above vaccines.
For example, the CDC suggests that adults receive the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (tdap) vaccination every 10 years. Other vaccines that may benefit adults include the Zoster vaccine, which protects against shingles.
How do you know if you need a booster?
It can be difficult to look at the immunization charts and know which vaccine boosters you need. There are many factors that go into your individual schedule. Your overall health, whether or not you’re pregnant, and your age all play a role in determining which vaccines you need.
Rest assured, our compassionate providers make sure that you get the vaccines you need on the schedule you need them.
